Vietnam's far north: the mountain passes of the Ha Giang loop, rice-terrace walks around Sapa and the karst river valleys of Ninh Binh.
The north has some of the most spectacular landscapes in Asia. This journey drives the Ha Giang loop, among limestone peaks close to the Chinese border, before crossing to the terraced valleys of Sapa.
Walks are graded to suit you and your guide and driver stay with you throughout. The final days in Ninh Binh are gentler: boats, bicycles and village temples.
Day 1
Met at Noi Bai airport and taken to a boutique hotel in the old quarter.
Days 2–4
Drive north to Ha Giang, then three days on the loop by private car: the Quan Ba Heaven Gate, Dong Van old town, the Ma Pi Leng Pass above the Nho Que river and, timed right, a weekly market.
Days 5–6
A long, beautiful drive west to Sapa. Two days of guided walking through the terraces to Hmong and Red Dao villages.
Days 7–8
Down to Ninh Binh for rowing boats through Trang An, the climb to Hang Mua and cycling past rice fields.
Day 9
Back to Hanoi for a final evening in the old quarter.
Day 10
Private transfer to Noi Bai airport.
