Traditional junks among limestone islands, with kayakers at a cave entrance in Lan Ha Bay

Vietnam North to South

The whole length of Vietnam at an unhurried pace: Hanoi's old quarter, the karst valleys of Ninh Binh, a night on Lan Ha Bay, imperial Hue, lantern-lit Hoi An, Saigon and the Mekong.

Duration
14 nights
Ideal for
First-time visitors, couples and families
Route
Hanoi → Ninh Binh → Lan Ha Bay → Hue → Hoi An → Ho Chi Minh City → Mekong Delta

If this is your first time in Vietnam, this is the journey we would plan for ourselves. It begins in the lanes of Hanoi, moves through the limestone river country of Ninh Binh and out to sea among the islands of Lan Ha Bay, then flies south to the old imperial capital of Hue.

From there you cross the Hai Van Pass to Hoi An, fly on to Ho Chi Minh City and finish among the slow waterways of the Mekong Delta. Internal flights replace long drives, and you have at least two nights almost everywhere.
